Many people who enter inpatient rehab for addiction may think that 30–60–90 days will be enough for them to stay sober once they discharge from treatment. This is a misconception made by many and often turns or out cause relapse within the first few months of early recovery.

Continued Recovery

During the inpatient recovery process, the treatment team will often times create a continuing care or discharge plan that the patient should follow post discharge. The care plan will be customized depending on the patients specific needs and history. While in treatment, most programs will offer relapse prevention groups where they discuss coping skills and tools to use once out of treatment to maintain sobriety. These groups are an introduction to dealing with stress and triggers in healthier ways.

Continuing Care Options

Support Meetings

The most common continuing care recommendation is to attend 12 step meetings or non 12 step meetings. These meetings provide a community and a layer of accountability for the individual in early recovery to use as an outlet of support. The support communities have helped thousands of people maintain sobriety and stay on course in their recovery.

Outpatient Rehab

If available in your area, attending an intensive outpatient program is an excellent option. An outpatient drug programs and rehab will be a continuation of the inpatient treatment as it will also provide a treatment team of a psychiatrist and therapist. The only difference is the individual will live at home or in a sober living. The outpatient program allows for an individual to attend work or school while also receiving treatment. This level of care is often covered by insurance.

Sober Living

Another popular recommendation and layer of support is to live in a sober living home right after discharging from treatment. A sober living home will allow for an individual to live with others who are in early recovery and have a network of support right there at their fingertips. Sober Living homes often require random drug and alcohol testing, have set sober living rules, and have a house manager who monitors the house residents.

FULL THROTTLE RECOVERY SUPPORT

To really increase your chances of staying sober, using all of the support tools outlined will help you stay immersed in the recovery community and you will have top level support. The best recommendation to anyone in early addiction recovery is to live in sober living, attending support meetings, and go to an Intensive Outpatient Program!
